Two letters from Helen Gates Mitchell (1813-1879) to her daughter, Helen Hubbard Mitchell Cribbs (1849-1916) (later to become Mrs. H.O.Cribbs) Helen Hubbard was away at school during the Civil War. This is copied from a transcribed copy; all punctuation and spelling is "as written". Letter 1: Mitchellville Ala March the 1 '64 Dear Daughter I recived 2 letters from you last night with gladness for I thought I would not hear from you soon a gain I heard that the Yankees was on there march to selma and I thought I could not here from you any more I recived 6 letters from you a bout three weeks ago at one time and two for Mr. Brown at the same I have sent three letters to you cince I recived the six Daughter if the Yankees should get to Selmer and break up the school you must go to your Uncle Levi Marten's and board there till I send after you but you must use your Judgment a bout it but try and go to school all the time if you can where you are if you can and if not at your uncles and if there is no school at all try and get your uncle to bring you home your Pa is now at home but he is going back in two or three days I sent one letter by your Pa when he was at home before and he mailed it at Jasper Ala You must send some of your letters to Jasper and your Pas will bring them to me and direct some of them to Littlesville Ala Ther ant any offis kep at Thornhill now but you can still direct your letters to Thornhill if you want to for McDegrafinreed stops all of the letters that is directed to Thornhill be sent me your letters I recian you think I am not going to send your summer close to you I think I will have a chance to send them to you in a bout eight days Mr Wiley is coming down there and he will bring them to you there or leave them at Selma & you can get them I will send you sum candles in the trunk I have sent your close in that ould black trunk of Lou's I will have to lock it with my drawer key and if you cant find a key to unlock it you will have to break it Daughter you must take the best car of your self you can Your Pa will be gon all the time and I cant com to see you Ther ant any person her that I could get to come and see you I have not seen nor heard from Leroy Brown cince tha last of Nov I sent them two letters that came with mine to Dr. Shackelford's at Cortland ala Daughter you keep saying why I dont tell you a bout the Yankees being here I wrote to you in three letters about them Thay was here in Oct The was two Companys here in one night Tha cut up a great deal the Yanks put there pistoles against you Pa and said if he spoke a word tha would shoot him Tha tooke about 3000 dolars in all and Haley told some strang Cavelry from Miss to robe your Pa and tha don so the robers is going through the country and tha robe everybody that tha come to Johney is the smartest little fellow you ever seen Mary sends her love to you and your Pa sends his love to you and said you must write to him I expect to send this letter by Mo Harris he belongs to Jeff Ridt and if he comes to Selma your Pa expected to send you som money by Mo Harris but he ant a going that way he will send it by Mr. Wiley when I send your close good bey my Dear child write often so I can her from you Helen Mitchell Daughter I could not get your mi__d dress wove in time to make it you can get it maid I will send you thread and linen and som buttons and the mony to pay for it it will make you a nice travlin dress I will send you som peaces to cord it with of black mariner Letter 2 Mitchellville Ala May the 3 '64 Dear Daughter I take my seate this plesent daye to write you a few lines which leaves us all well and I hope you are the same I have nothing new to write you more than Dick was maried on Sunday morning least it was the first day of May they was not but three persones except our own famly She said she would of bin glad you could of bin her I would I know but I look fored for a happey meeting when you do com home I will be so glad to see you when you do com home I wont know how to do I have not herd from your brother cence he was her I cannot account why he dont write I have not heard from the valley in some time Bess (?) Henley has bin to see us & satayed four days with us She has growd a great deal cence I seen her to be four She wished often while she was her that you was at home I have not received a letter from you cence the 19 April it is in fault of the mail Your Pa left on19 April & Ive not herd from him cence Your cosin Vol Henley has bin in to see Anderson & Sarah They was well & doing well when He was there I have herd from Leroy Brown cence he was her onley what you wrote a bout him I would be glad to know what has becom of him you must in your next letter let me know if you kneed aney thing & I will send it to you if I can & if you will kned aney shoes let me know Johney is the swetes little fellow you ever seen I wish you could se him I am looking for Sallie every day she wrote she would be her in May I must close all of the famley sends ther love to you & all of the black ans want to see you vary bad Milliam Underwood says he would like to see you varey much you must write often and direct som of your letters to Pikeville Ala and som to Thornhill you must write to your Pa the letter you send to Pikeville direct them to R. C. Mathis & he will send them to me write how you are getting along with your Bookes and music and give my love to your room mates & receive my cincer love your self may God bless you my Dear childe & protect you & keep you from all harme H. Mitchell PS I will send you a peace of cake it tis not nice my sugar was so bad I could not get aney nice sugar I will sent it in a sepreat envelope Finally, here's a letter written from Daniel Edward Cribbs wife, Emma to Helen in April 1881: Tuscaloosa Ala April 13 Dear Sister Nellie & children I have been anxious to write to you ever since your terrible affliction, but my own troubles & affliction has prevented me from doing so we lost our darling little boy on the 16th of March Wa___ O_tt__ was his name & he was so sweet & smart. it does ___ to me sometimes that it is more than I can bear but I no he is at rest & I no we all have to die & he died in his innocence but that mothers love is there that god planted in us & we cant help but grieve Oh Nellie I think of you & your little ones so much I dont no of any thing that I can say that would comfort you any we all have own troubles & trials in this world we are what god has told us in his blessed word & let us all go to him for comfort & consolation Sister Addie was taken ill will the same disease & died on the 7th all comes from cold the doc say & then turns to congestion there has been several cases of it Minnie had as severe attack of it was dangerously ill for two weeks & Addie was helping me to wait on her when she was taken sick we have had such a dreadful cold winter Nellie Pas family are dieing off so fast it makes me sudder to think of it out of nine children only three left Eddie's health is good now last year his health was bad all the summer & fall Nellie you have hearts _______________ and may we all live to meet owur lobed when the weary are at rest ______________no more forever. Nellie we would all be so delighted if you would pay us a visit this year & bring all your children. Pa & Ma would be so glad to see you & ___ they are both in very good health & often speak of you & yours we all feel for you in your loneliness Nellie I have four (?) sweet children all girls M_______, Addie, Edna & Daisy our little boy was nineteen months old & a remarkable sweet child Oh it is hard so hard to us to give him up, but gods will be done write soon & tell me about all your children your aff.
