Philander is in the 1850 Alabama Census in Tuscaloosa Co., Alabama. In 1860, he is still in Tuscaloosa. In 1870, he is located in Colbert Co., Alabama, with wife and children. Philander was named after Philander LaVergy, the father of his mother who worked on the steamboat "Hercules". In 1891, Philander moved his family to Matador, Motley Co., Texas. In Greene County, Alabama records: "To any Judge, Justice of the Peace, or legally authorized minister of the Gospel of the County and State aforesaid, I, William C. Oliver, Judge of the Probate Court of Greene County, send greeting. You are by these presents authorized and permitted to join together in the Holy Estate of Matrimony, Mr. Philander A. Cribbs, to, Miss Nancy G. McShan, which marriage, when by you solemnized, you shall certify to my office. Signed the 23rd day of Nov. A.D. 1860. William C. Oliver, Judge. ...The marriage, between the above named persons was solemnized by me on the 28th day of November, 1860. N. R. Morgan |
