Compiled by Bill Cribbs
Quoted from the RECORD OF THE HILL-CRIBBS FAMILY, "Grandmother Hill was the daughter of John Cribbs and Anna Kitch and was born in Sandyville, Ohio, January 1, 1833. She had two brothers, Henry and Jacob, and three sisters. Her father, John Cribbs and his wife came over from Pennsylvania about 1803 with Major Cribbs, John Judy, and Henry and Martin Keller settling in New Philadelphia, Ohio. The Cribbs' home was one of the first twelve or fifteen in New Philadelphia and was located in the vicinity of the intersection of the present streets, Front and South Broadway. Grandmother knew New Philadelphia, when there were few houses there, and Tuscarawas County was practically a wilderness. She watched cows on pasture between New Philadelphia and Dover; saw the County and town develop into thriving communities; and knew practically all of the old settlers; the Kniselys, Judys, Helmicks, Correls, etc. Her mother, Anna Kitch, was the daughter of Marion Kitch and his wife. Little mention is made of them except that Great Grandmother Kitch was very beautiful and was an accomplished singer and sang in the Presbyterian Church. She died when Grandma was quite a little girl and Grandma went to live with Mr. and Mrs. Joe Helmich. She had two brothers and three sisters. Her brother, Great Uncle Tenry (Henry) Cribbs, married and had three sons: Jacob, William, and Charles. Jacob married and moved to Nineveh and reared several boys and girls. William lived in New Philadelphia and had no children. Charles lived at Sharon and had two daughters and two sons. Great Uncle Jacob and his wife lived in a church home at Zelienopel, Pennsylvania. They had no children. Great Aunt Margaret married a Cable and they removed to Iowa. It is believed they had one son and two daughters. Great Aunt Clarissa married Sebastian Shane. To them were born three sons and three daughters: Charles, Milton and John, Ida (Milar), Anna, and Catherine Elizabeth (France). Great Aunt Catherine married Simon Myers (sic) and they were blessed with three sons and one daughter: Charles, Emmet, Allen, and Anna (Charles Shumaker). One son, Henry ("Lank") Dorn, to a former marriage, went west to Iowa, probably with the Cables. Beatrice McGirr, a Granddaughter, relates, 'Even when Grandmother was very infirm, I have taken her up town in a wheel chair and it was wonderful to hear her describe New Philadelphia, as she knew and saw it settled, grow and change into a city. She saw the trails change into paved roads, saw the only mode of travel in her days change from that on horseback to the street cars, canal, trains, and the automobile; lighting from candles to oil lamps and then to electricity; the Pony Express to daily mail delivery by carriers; and gave evidence of her wealth of knowledge acquired by living and learning the hard way in those transition years while rearing a family of eleven children. Despite these years of toil and her age, she was alert and keen in thought and she would describe the completion and operation of the canal, the opening of the vast coal fields of our country, the building of the B & O Railroad which made work the year round possible for the shipment of coal by rail instead of just during the open weather by the Ohio Canal.'" |
