Jacob was a printer who published the Greene County Gazette in Erie, Alabama, a town which he pioneered. The paper ran only 2 years. His will exists in the office of the Judge of Probate in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and reads as follows: "The nuncupative will of Jacob J. Cribbs - Tuskaloosa, Feb'y 10th, 1834 - Last will and testament of J. J. Cribbs. I bequeath to Peter Cribbs, Senior, my Father, one hundred dollars, to John my eldest brother one hundred dollars, to Brother Peter one hundred dollars, to Brother George one hundred dollars, to Alexander one hundred dollars, Sister Catherine three hundred dollars, Sister Mary Ann two hundred dollars, Sister Susan two hundred dollars and to Daniel one hundred dollars and to his three children Adaline, Harvey Hoit [Hoyt] and Mary Anne Christianna the sum of two hundred dollars to be equally divided between them, the residue for if there should be any I give to Sister Mary Ann and Susan. Peter Cribbs, Jr. and Lucy Lavergy signed for Jacob. - Orphans Court April 7, 1834."
