Compiled by Bill Cribbs
Peter moved from Pennsylvania to Tuscarawas Co., Ohio to help pioneer the town of New Philadelphia with John Knisely in 1807. Alexander, Daniel, Peter Jr., and Jacob J. moved south to Alabama and Miss- issippi. Daniel, Alexander, and Jacob J. moved to Greene Co., AL, and later to Tuscaloosa Co. Peter Jr. moved to Monroe Co., Mississippi, and later to Military Springs, Lamar Co., Alabama. John remained in New Philadelphia, Ohio, and began his family there. When Peter moved to New Philadelphia, Ohio, in 1807, he carried on his pottery trade where he built a small cabin on the east side of Broadway in the village. With him had come others from Westmoreland Co., including Henry Lauffer, Christian Stout, and George Leininger. In May 1808, Daniel and Peter Williams came on foot from Greensburg. Peter Williams was only 16 years old but had clerked in a store. Peter Cribbs offered him half his little cabin in New Philadelphia, and a store was opened there. Peter Cribbs "will receive butter in payment of earthenware at 7 cents per pound, to be delivered at his dwellingplace in New Philadelphia" was on an old advertisement. Later, in 1833, Peter Cribbs is mentioned as being on the town council. According to the Roster of Ohio Soldiers in the War of 1812, Peter Cribbs was a major in the 3rd Regiment, Ohio Militia, under Colonel Robert Bay from August 28, 1812 to November 14, 1812 and was paid $56.45 for his term of duty.
