Compiled by Bill Cribbs
Heinrich Jacob CRIBBS was a wheelwright by trade. There is a reference to another son named "Philip" but no verification can be found. Heinrich moved to Westmoreland Co., as did his brother, John, after the Revolutionary War, and lived in Hempfield Twp. He held the offices of Major and Captain in the county militia. In the Westmoreland County minute books it is recorded that Jacob Cribbs, along with John Shotts, was one of the men fined for participating in the Whiskey Rebellion of 1794. This rebellion was actually a protest against taxation without representation and was generally supported by the Scotch-Irish of the area in western Pennsylvania, rather than by the Germans. -Noted from De Tar & Allied Families book, compiled by Ruth G. Hall and Lucille O'Brien, obtained from Mrs. Jeannie Brown. Another source has Heinrich's deathdate as 12 Oct 1835. |
