!THE HUNTERS OF BEDFORD CO, VA by Walter Marvin Hunter, Polyanthos Inc.,
Cottonport LA 71327, 1973; page 48, FHL Book 929.273 H916hw:
1760 Mar 24 Alexander Hunter sold 330 acres on Wreck Island Creek, Bedford Co,
VA to a John Hunter. John Hunter was a witness in Bedford Co, 1763 to deeds
from Alexander Hunter to his son James and from Alexander and James to Edward,
the son of the elder John Hunter. This John Hunter also lived in Bedford Co,
east of Lynchburg and only a few miles from the Wreck Island Creek vicinity,
the area later being taken into Campbell Co, where he died in 1796. He is said
to have been born in 1737, the son of John Hunter, a Scotch emigrant and his
wife Henrietta Davidson. The John of Bedford and Campbell Counties named these
children in his will: Benjamin, John, Alexander, Robert, James and Elizabeth.
Alexander Hunter married Elizabeth Steele, emigrated from the Province of
Ulster and County Tyrone in Ireland to the State of New Jersey, thence to
Bedford County, VA. they had 6 children who attained years of maturity, to
wit: 1) John Hunter who married Rachel McFarlane [this was later proved not
the John who married Rachel...note handwritten in margin]; 2. James Hunter who
married Mary McFarlane; 3. Alexander who married Martha Hairston, 4. Samuel who
married Sally Whitworth, 5. Elly who married Nicholas Hays, and Elizabeth who
married John Wilson.

"Genealogy of James Madison Hunter":
"Alexander Hunter married Elizabeth Steele, emigrated from the Province of
Ulster and County Tyrone in Ireland to the State of New Jersey, thence to
Bedford County, Virginia. They had six children who attained years of
maturity, to -witt: 1. John Hunter, who married Rachel McFarlane and was killed
by a party of Indians near Nashville, Tenn. He left no issue. His widow
married McNairy, a lawyer from Guilford County, N.C., also a circuit judge, who
died also without an heir. 2. James Madison Hunter who married Mary McFarlane
3. Alexander Hunter who married Martha Hairston 4. Samuel Hunter who married
Sally Whitworth 5. Elly Hunter who married Nicholas Hays 6. Elizabeth Hunter
who married John Wilson, James Madison Hunter and Mary McFarlane had 12
children
