Notes for Larkin NEWTON

Inscribed on Larkin's monument: "He fought under General Jackson in the Battle of New Orleans in the War of 1812". The Epaulet which he wore at the battle was displayed in the historical museum at Dallas during the Texas Centennial.

An explanation of how the county got its name comes from a prominent early family of Missouri's Newton County. They claim that the county was named from them. Larkin Newton was one of the early settlers of the area. He and his nephew, Elbert C. Newton, were active in creating the new government of Newton County. Soon after the county was formed, Edbert C. Newton was appointed on the the commissioners for the Sugar Creek Saw Mill road on June 1, 1839. November 12, 1839, " Authority was given to borrow money to enter the pre-emptive right of the county to the county seat. Elbert C. Newton was contractor."
(1888 History of Newton County, Godspeed). In 1840, Larkin Newton was appointed a county judge. In 1844, Elbert C. Newton was elected sheriff of the county. The Elbert Newton family moved to Texas in the 1850's.
