According to their bible and verified through Vada Gentry, the family moved from Madison City, Kentucky to Mt. Vernon, Ohio on October 2, 1911. They traveled there by train. To save money, George rode in the cattle car with their livestock. Maggie was pregnant and rode with the children in the passenger section.

This branch of the Gentry's were practicing Seventh Day Adventists. Mount Vernon, Ohio had a large Seventh Day Adventist community and also a private Adventist Academy where the children attended school. Glenna and Vada, and maybe others graduated from this academy, Veda going on to a Seventh Day Adventist college in Washington DC, and graduating from there. She was the executive secretary to the president of Review and Herald; a Seventh Day Adventist publishing Company for many years.
