Notes for Elbert P. JORDAN

MILITARY: Both Elbert and his brother, William, were members of Company "A", First Galt's) Regiment, Infantry, Georgia State Line, CSA (Confederate States of America). Elbert enlisted as a Private Dec. 1, 1862 and was killed July 22, 1864.

LETTER: 15 months prior to his death (4/26/1863), while serving in the confederate army, Elbert sent a letter to Frances from Savannah. A transcript of this poignant letter may be obtained from Jack A. Jordan, 15545 SW Village Court, Beaverton, OR 97007-3530.

DEATH: Elbert was killed in the "Battle of Atlanta". His wife, Frances Ann, was pregnant at the time with their seventh child. Frances Ann and her oldest son, Norval, drove a wagon to Atlanta to retrieve her husband's body. Upon arrival in Atlanta however she found that his remains had already been buried in a mass grave on Peters Street. A memorial stone commemorating Elbert's memory has been placed in the Jordan plot at the Glore cemetery on Glore Road, Mableton, GA. About three months after his death, Elbert's daughter, Elbert Frances Ann, was born. It doesn't take much immagination to visualize how difficult it must have been for Frances Ann to raise seven children after the death of her husband. It must have have been like a chapter from "Gone With the Wind". General Sherman's "march to the sea" must have gone right through or very near their farm.

BURIAL: Per Volume II of Cobb County Cemeteries compiled by the Cobb County Genealogical Society, the marker for Elbert P. Jordan (27222) is located in the Glore Family Cemetery, Mableton, GA which indicates that he was a Private in the Confederate States of America (Co E, Res 1, Georgia State Line).

ESTATE: Elbert died intestate and John T. Glore was appointed Administrator of the Estate by the Cobb County Ordinary 9/6/1869. Elbert's widow, Frances Ann, was appointed Guardian for their seven children. Finally, the Court also awarded sixty acres of land valued $300 plus $200 cash from the estate for the support of Frances Ann and her seven children.
