Notes for Joseph JORDAN

A DISTINGUISHED MINISTER SOCIETY OF FRIENDS
FROM THE BOOK THESE JORDAN'S WERE HERE - After Ann and Joseph were married, they built a manor house known as Jordna Landing, on the South bank of the Roanoke River, in Bertie County, North Carolina. It was a brick house typical of the seventeenth century homes in Virginia. The date of the building of this house was 1713, and it is the oldest one still standing in Bertie County today - standing there in spite of the fact that the fine paneling and intricately carved wood was destroyed by fire in 1929 and has never been restored.

Besides being a planter and operator of a large landing wharf on the Roanoke River where ocean-going ships could dock, load and unload their cargo, Joseph was a minister of the Quaker Faith and often accompanied his brother robert on missionary journeys, as well as going to Holland to preach independent of his brother.

There were three girls who came to bless the home of Joseph and Ann Pleasants Jordan: Sarah born February 12, 1731. Abigail born July 14, 1733 and Margaret who was born after the death of her father and lived only nineteen months. Sarah, the eldest of Joseph and Ann Jordan's children, married Joseph Robertson; and Abigail, her sister, married James Scott.

In time after the death of Joseph Jordan, his wife Ann married Thomas Trotter, and by him had three children: Thomas Trotter, Jr., who married Elizabeth Robertson; Ann Trotter, who married Charles Woodson; and Elizabeth Trotter, who married William Scott. With the names Robertson and Scott appearing twice in the marriage of Ann Pleasant Jordan's children, it is likely the case of brothers and sisters marrying brothers and sisters.
