Charles came to California in 1850, mined for about 10 years, Served in county government as deputy sheriff, deputy County Clerkm deputy Assessor and Road Commissioner. He read law and became a lawyer. Elected District Attorney in 1877 for 2 years. Was Elected Superior Judge as Domocrat in 1879, serving 24 years. Sentenced Black Bart, Notorious robber to 6 years in San Quentin. Retired in 1904 due to failing eyesight, committed suicide on MArch 2, 1906, due to depression caused by ill health.

Married to Charlette Noriega of San Andreas, CA. She was from Louisana, and came to hangtown (Placerville) CA. in 1847, studied law in San Francisco. Her family was in New York.
Charles and Charlotte's home was still standing on California Street in 1980.
