Notes for Rebecca PIERCE

It was said that Rabecca was Pennsylvania Dutch. Rebecca and Arthur, when first married lived in Pittsburgh, PA. They then moved to Allegheny County, PA, then to Laceyville, Harrison County, then to Franklin Township, Harrison Co., Ohio. They had three children when they moved to Harrison County, Ohio.

They bought a farm there for from the Government for a a-fitney-abit, (6 1/2 cents) and acre. They first bought about 240 acres and then afterwards bought another 120 more acres. It was all woods, when they purchased it originally. They built a house of poles, (small logs). There was no floor or no door. They hung a quilt for a door over the opening.. They could hear the wolves howling around at night and they were vulnerable with a proper door.

Rebecca scraped the floors to make it level, Not much of a fireplace, which was made of stone and sticks. A few days before they moved, they caught a bear in sight of the cabin... They had greased paper for a window. They later built a better house. This one was a two story log house. In this house Arthur died from a tree that had fallen on top of him. He is buried at Feedsprings Cemetery, Harrison County, Ohio. not far from the church. There is a monument where the Feed Springs Church sit that is a 3 foot high and made of white marble. One side reads: Arthur B. Patterson, died October 1, 1858 age 65. On the other is Rebecca, wife of A. Patterson died February 4, 1873 age 88.

The writer of the book, Edith Swain Gardner writes: Nancy Jane (4) Patterson Swain, my mother, was 2 years, 8 months old when Arthur B. Patterson died. I heard her say that she could remember seeing his funeral procession going up the hill to Feeds Spring Church Cemetery..

Then after Arthur pied, his Son, Samuel (3) Patterson built a two story frame house, (it cost about $1,000.) on the same farm. This is where Rabecca Pierce Patterson died at the age of 88.

Most of the Patterson's were Republicans. Rabecca claimed she was a relation to President Franklin Pierce, born 1804 in Hillsboro, New Hampshire. His father Benjamin Pierce, A veteran of the Revolution and Governor of New Hampshire in 1827. Franklin Pierce was the 14th President of the United States from 1853 to 1857. He died in 1869. He was a Democrat. This was told to Edith Swain Gardner by her Grandmother Rebecca Smith Patterson, Obadiah (3) Patterson's widow. Much of it was in her words. She never called him Arthur, she always called him "Arter".
