Notes for Thomas Peter COSGROVE

Thomas Cosgrave was a well known man of Madera California. He was a Spanish American War veteran who won considerable fame through a poem he wrote while in the Philippines. The poem was titled "I want to go home" Mr Cosgrove was once an Editor of the Madera Mercury, and for a time the under sheriff in Madera County, and also was Postmaster from 1923 to 1928. He passed away in 1928.

Newspaper articles on his death were in the Madera Tribune, Fresno Republican, & the San Francisco Examiner. They reported that he was on his way to Cuba for a reunion of veterans of the Spanish-American War, when he died of a heart attack on the Steamer California, off Lower California. His body was shipped to San Francisco and was met by sons and transported by train to Madera for burial.

Lists his accomplishments:
Newspaper work, with the Madera Mercury, Service in Spanish-American Way, and famed for writing the poem; "I Want To Go Home". He also served as Postmaster in Madera. He was survived by his two sons, Thomas Jr. and Carlos Cosgrave

Thomas was undersheriff from 1911 to 1915, according to Madera County Sheriff's records (which were quite incomplete).
