John Newton was a patriot of the American Revolution. He served as Corporal and Sergeant with South Carolina's first regiment, commanded by Colonel C. Pickney and Captain Simeon Thues. He also served with Garrison in the Seige of Charleston, South Carolina in 1780.

The Old "Ninety -Six" District of South Carolina was created (originally) in 1769 and was abolished in 1798. (The 96th District from 1785 to 1798 consisted of the present day Union County.

It is said by Gay Hix that he had at least eight children.
Also that he may have another wife, Maybe another Mitchell.
John was a cabinet maker by trade
