Thomas was a Lawyer and educated in the rural public grade and high schoolds of Carter County, KY. Granduated from Holy Family Business School, Ashland, Kentucky and graduated from George Washington Law school, Washington D. C. with a degree of LL.B.

In young manhood he engaged in teaching in the rural schools of Carter County, for a time. Leter he bacame a traveling salesman; and in 1911 he became Secretary to his brother, William Jason Fields, Congressman from the 9th Kentucky District. Resigning his position, he located in Texas where he practiced law for a time. Abandoning the practice of law in Texas due to ill health, he returned to Carter County, and subsequently established a home and continued the practice of law at Srayson where he lived until his death.
