All of this information came from Ann Herring in Colorado...

I'm sure I remember a will of JOANNE HERRING naming JULINES eldest son JOHN born 1607 which when matched with the JO. HERON with passage aboard the "Alexander" to Barbadoe May 2, 1635, age 28, provided the first possible link from the Isle of Wight Co. VA 1645 JOHN HERRING to being the son
of JULINES.

The son of JOHN HERRING (1560-1626) of Coventry England, and JOANNE ( PALMER?)
(d- 1628) JULINES PALMER (d 1560), is thought by some to be JULINES HERRING'S maternal
grandfather.

Although there were at least two John Herrings in the colonies during the 1640s, I've (Ann Herring)
become more and more sure that the Isle of Wight John Herring which heads this genealogy is the
son of the well documented Rev. JULINES HERRING originally from Coventry England who in
1637 escaped religious persecution by becoming assistant pastor to the church of England
in Amsterdam Holland, from whence many of the first English settlers embarked to America,
some transported by the Bennets, deacons of the Amsterdam church. In 1635 the following
three entries appear in the transport records:

May 2, 1635: JO. HERRING, 28 yrs., on the "Alexander" from Port of London to ye Barbadoes.
Capt. Burche and Gilbert Grimes Master, p Certificate from the Minister where they late dwelt, the men took oaths of allegience, & Supremacie die et Ao prd. July 1635;

JOHN HERON, 18 yrs. on the "Paul of London", Leonard Betts Master bound to VA. per certificate from the Minister of Gravesend of their conformitie to the Church of England. Nov. 20, 1635;

JOHN HERON 20 yrs on the 'Expedition" to the Barbadoes, Peter Blackler, Master.The men
have taken the oaths of allegience and supremacie,and been examined by the Minister of
the town of Gravesend and touching their conformitie to the Church of England.

There is good reason to believe that all three of these JOHN HERRINGS is the eldest son of Rev. Julines Herring, who was at this time having great difficulty himself obtaining passage out of England from church authorities. JOHN as the son of JULINES gives his correct age for his first passage on the "Alexander", which might very well have been blocked by the churchmen already on the lookout for a ship passage obtained by the father.
In July and in Nov. JOHN obtains his certificate of conformity to the church of England from the
Minister at Gravesend where the ship was to embark, not from the Minister "where he late dwelt",
and was known to be the son of Julines. It is curious that the age and name spelling are changed for the second and third trys, perhaps to avoid suspicion of his identity? And also curious, assuming this scenario, that JOHN did not embark on the "Paul of London" in July, perhaps determined to meet someone important in Barbadoes, before going on to VA?

On April 24, 1642 a JOHN HERRING, who we believe to be a second JOHN, immigrates to Peachy Point in Prince George Co. on the south side of the James River, and across from Herring Mill Creek, who seems to travel about the VA. colonies involved in building projects for which a son of Julines would not have been schooled.

May 22, 1642 JOHN HERRING is transported by Robert Eyres to Lower Norfolk Co. where exists a
Herring Canal connecting Dismal Swamp Canal with the southern branch of the Elizabeth River. And in 1642 a JOHN HERRING goes to James City Co., and Herring Mill Creek is mentioned a bit up river from Jamestown.
