"Rev. Martin Haggard, second son of Nathaniel haggard, was born in Albemarle county, Virginia, 1748. In early life he united with the Baptist Church, and at the age of 20 years began to preach and was regarded as a man of much promise.
He, and five others on horseback, started west on a preaching tour in East Tennessee and Kentucky, stopping in different settlements and holding meetings. In passing through the mountain wilderness they were fired upon by either Indians or robbers and he, with two others, was killed."
