Ernest fought in World War II, with the U.S. Naval Reserve, as a Gunner's Mate, 3rd Class and is listed as either Missing in Action or Buried at Sea.
Now, his obituary is found so this is now considered legend. Here is his obituary: "Ernest Cribbs
Ernest Cribbs, 79, died at his home in Winslow, April 8. He was born June 6,1921 in Hartley, Texas to Emma and Carl Cribbs, He was raised in the Texas Panhandle at Borger, Texas. He attended school in Borger. Ernest volunteered for the U.S. Army Air Corps. He was sent to England on a mission assignment into Europe with the 8th Airforce 100th Bomb group. February 1944 his B-17 plane was shot down. He bailed out on the Isle of Fen and was taken prisoner by the Germans. As a prisoner of war he was held in Stalag Luft I at Barth, Germany for 15 months. He was released from prison camp in 1945 and honorably discharged as a Captain.
Ernest and his wife of 52 years were married in 1948. In 1951 the Airforce recalled him for military service for the Korean War. He came to Winslow from Amarillo, Texas in 1963. He was an Electronic Technician for the National Weather Service until he retired in 1981.
Survivors include his wife Montie Jean Burns Cribbs of Winslow; sons, Randall, Michael, and Donald Cribbs of Flagstaff; daughter, Carla Baber of Flagstaff; brothers, Dale of Oklahoma, Roy of Oklahoma, and Jimmy Cribbs of Washington; sister, June Verrett of Michigan; 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
His parents Carl and Emma Cribbs preceded him in death.
Graveside services with military honors were held at 2 p.m.Thursday April 12 in the Hartley Cemetery in Hartley, Texas. There will be a memorial service at 10 a.m. Saturday April 21 at the Desert View Baptist Church in Winslow.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to Northland Hospice P.O. Box 997, Flagstaff, Arizona 86002.
